Editorial design for Tavinho Moura’s storybook.

The book is a collection of São Francisco River’s stories, with Maria de Matuê as its lead character. The protagonist is inspired by the author’s acquaintance with several women during his long stays in the region.

The narrative makes use of myths, describes landscapes, plots, and is a love testimony by someone profoundly bonded with that land.

For the cover, a raw paper card with silkscreen printing was used, in order to achieve a natural look. The visible binding is meant to take away the formality of a classic hard cover.

Despite its length, the text was not divided into chapters. In order to provide the reading some rhythm and pause, the solution was to scale up the opening sentence of each story break. Nanjing illustrations by Jorge dos Anjos also offer a counterpoint to the uniform text spot.

Mário Zavagli’s watercolor brings color to the editorial design, while revealing the geography of the story’s setting. The flyleaf displays the landscape, which allowed for printing on heavier paper.
